Who's the Weird Guy?

Since I don't have any new pictures as of late. I went through some of my archives and found these pictures of the day I went to the pumpkin patch. Blake and I (Blue Shirt) spent it with Keith and his family going to the patch and finding the best pumpkin ever.
I admire Keith and his family and the things they have done to get where they are. If you guys read this (I don't know if you do, or don't) keep on living by faith trust in the Lord. I am excited to see what is going to happen with you guys this next year and how God is going to top last year with the things he did.

So,
…Umm good times. Christmas and New Years were all right. Christmas I was with Grandma, Mom, and Dad the whole time. That was all right. New years was a little better (exciting). I was able to take Clover to the airport on Saturday to Boise and spend some time up there finding something to do. Well, I didn’t really have to find it cause it found me.
I wanted to go to church where some of my friends go to church but I couldn’t find the building. So I settle for next best thing. I go and get some "not church" clothes on and I head in to one very popular church in Boise very large and very packed. So I kind of made my beard bigger (it was mussed up) and I wore a hat and mussed up my hair. Walked in this church and looked for a seat. Now I was a little late and as I scanned over the whole congregation I was looking for a spot to sit...still searching I look behind me and see a free space open right in between a young woman and a gentleman. I look at the man and motion to sit down, he agreed (with his body language) and I sat there...we stood up sang a few songs...and I sat there...sat through the sermon...(which was very good by the way) and then the end of the service came and stood up and began to "wander" around...Not a soul spoke to me. Not a greeter. Not the ones I sat next to. No one. I was kind of shocked by this action at first but then I thought of where I was. I liked this experiment so I left the church and found another church to go to. The church I went to bragged they were a "world church" (it was in their name) kind of interesting but I went in sat down in the back of the room again. This time however it wasn't so packed. There were about 15 people. We went through communion and I wasn't even looked at to be served. I sat there watching me as an "outsider" get ignored and pushed off to the side in a large church and small church alike. This seems really intriguing me. I was talking to Mindy and I told her this story of my experience. She was not at all happy with the way the church responded to me. She shared with me a song by...I forgot who now but I still have part of the lyrics they read:

A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgmental glances
Tells him that his chances are better out on the road

But if we are the body
Why aren't His arms reaching?
Why aren't His hands healing?
Why aren't His words teaching?
And if we are the body
Why aren't His feet going?
Why is His love not showing them there is a way?
There is a way

Great point Mindy. Why is the church supposed to be our safe house but when we get there all we see are scornful eyes looking back at us.
I worked with a man in Kentucky named Denny Peyman. I hear Denny used to go to different Churches around the Magic Valley as a "bum" and then later went to the pastor and told him how he felt and different things that occurred among the people. Kind of sly? Yes. Eye opening? I think so. So what action should we all take as people in the body of Christ, in the church, as seekers, as philosophers? I think that it’s kind of obvious what we need to do. The question is will I do it?

This isn't the direction of the post I wanted to make at all because now I'll have to type up another long story about my New Years...We'll see if I get that done. I have a letter I need to finish and get sent off to Mindy before I do anything else. By the way. Thank you Mindy for literally punching me in the gut and asking me hard questions and demanding action out of me instead of just talk.

Again with the long post I am sorry.

  1. You know you can always count on me for a punch in the gut once in a while! I expect the best out of you, Ryan, and I am grateful you won't settle for less.
By the way, the song is by Casting Crowns.

  2. Good post man!
Way to be scientific in your church research too. I liked your experiment, and the results you used in your conclusion. It was enlightening. I didn't think it was that long either. In fact, I think mine is longer.

Seriously though... I'm glad you had some time to spend in Southern Idaho even if it didn't seem like it was the most riviting of events in the world. It reminds me of a show I watched one time about photography. The guy was talking about how it isn't the situation that made the photos great, it was the angle at which they were captured. You had a marvelous angle at capturing a few church's attitudes on sharing with Christ. It is too bad that you didn't capture something beautiful though. Well, you captured something beautifully, even though it wasn't beautiful itself.
By the way, what's with the howitzer in the first shot?
